Laois Cricket finishing season on a high – Wining 2 Leinster Leagues

It was another good weekend for Laois cricket club, as the First II beat Pembroke (away) in their final game of the 2009 season. With Pembroke hoping to secure a victory to win the league, Laois were eager to spoil the party, and that’s just what happened. Winning the toss and batting first, Pembroke never looked comfortable. The Laois bowling and fielding was almost clinical as they restricted to Pembroke to less than 2 runs per over for the first 30 overs. Pembroke were eventually all out in the 45over for 118 runs. It was a great all round effort by Laois, but particular bowling credit must go to Rashid (2 for 19 off 10), Ben Hur (0 for 10 off 5), Clint Auret (3 for 21 off 10) and Asif (4 for 16 off 7).

Despite some uneven bounce in the wicket, Laois knew that the score would not be difficult to chase provided one batsman could settle and build and innings; and that’s exactly what happened when Armand Smit came in at number 3 and scored a solid 50 to anchor the innings. He was well supported by Matthew Auret (24) and Rashid (21 not out), who knocked off the winning runs in 25 over with some glamorous boundaries, giving Laois a comfortable 6 wicket victory.

The second team beat Leinster in Rathmines on Saturday to secure victory in their 2009 League competition. Batting first, Laois scored 257 for 9 off 45 overs, with Peter Auret top-scoring on 38. In the field, Laois dismissed Leinster for 140 runs, lead by Louis Auret who took 3 wickets. This League victory is great achievement for skipper Iain Woodward and his team.

The Thirds match against Railway Union on Sunday was cancelled, resulting in the thirds also being crowned League Champions for 2009. Well done to Adrian Tudor and the lads.
