Laois advance in Senior II Cup
Laois first II began their Senior II Cup campaign in Togher on Sunday with a convincing 7 wicket victory against Railway Union.
Fielding first, Laois bowled the visitors out for 124 runs after 41 overs. The Laois bowling and fielding was excellent, and the fact that eight of the wickets came from catches, including 3 each for Rixi Fuller behind the stumps and Shizad at point, was evidence of the commitment in the field. The Laois ground fielding, lead by Clint and Matthew Auret in particular, put the batsmen under considerable pressure. The best of the bowling came from Armand Smit (2 for 16 off 8), Clint Auret (2 for 19 off 8) ), and Matthew Auret (2 for 16 off 4).
Laois chased the required runs with ease. Norman Batanda got the Laois innings off the a good start, hitting a quick 16 runs before being caught at deep mid-on. John Ozenbrook continued to punish the bowling before being dismissed for a credible 44 runs. Laois hit the winning runs in the 29 over, taking victory by 7 wickets. Laois now advance to play Clontarf away in the next round in 2 weeks time.
Laois third II were also in action in Pembroke on Sunday. Batting first, Laois scored a massive 345 runs (a record for the club) off their 40 overs. William Blackley top-scored with 74, and was well supported by Alok (54). After the break, Laois dismissed the Pembroke batsmen for 170 to take victory by 175 runs. Preston Tudor was the pick of the bowling taking 2 wickets for only 7 runs.
Best of luck to Clint and Matthew Auret this week as they play in a Leinster U-18 Development Squad trial in Dublin on Thursday.
